Another Night, Another Bangkok Rooftop Bar

Bangkok is renowned for it’s rooftop bar scene, and it seems new ones are popping up all the time. After accidentally finding myself at two rooftop bars in just two nights, I decided that the universe was obviously telling me that I needed to visit a different rooftop bar each night of my five nights in the city. The below post traces my rooftop hopping journey.

Sky Bar

I arrived in Bangkok in the evening, groggy eyed after flying from Hong Kong. I checked into my pink palatial boutique hotel, and waited for an old friend from Canada to join me. We were both tired, jet lagged and a bit confused, but it had been several years since we had caught up so we decided to find somewhere to have a drink. We asked at our hotel reception for a recommendation and they told us to go to Sky Bar. Now we had sort of expected a local recommendation, but instead we ended up in a taxi and on our way to the 63rd floor of the state tower, to a bar which apparently featured in the Hangover 2.

This was a crazy experience. Not only were we not really expecting to be packed off to a high class rooftop bar, but the rest of the revelers were in full party mode. But when in Bangkok…. we quickly ordered a couple of cocktails and set to exploring the bar. It was like entering into another world. When we first entered the bar there was legit a guy standing at the edge, tossing giant wads of Thai Baht into the air from the 63rd floor. Now I’m not the sort of girl who often finds herself in places where people are literally throwing away money – it was a bit of culture shock to say the least.

Vertigo and Moon Bar

Cloud 47

Cloud 47 was an accidental rooftop bar visit. I was speaking at TBEX Thailand, and this is where Travel Massive was having their meet up event. Lucky for me, they had their event at a rooftop bar, so I was able to keep up my “a rooftop bar per day” quota. However, I can’t really properly review this one. Travel Massive had rented the whole space for their event, and it had it’s own drinks and food catering – plus was PACKED full of travel bloggers. It’s hard to saw what the ambiance would be like on a normal day, but due to the crowds and cheap beer, this was my least favourite rooftop bar.

  • Opening Hours: 5pm – midnight, closed on Sunday
  • Location: 47 Floor, United Center Building, 323, Silom Rd., Silom, Bang Rak, Bangkok 10500
  • BTS: Sala Daeng

Park Society – Sofitel So

It was at another TBEX Thailand event which led me to end up at Park Society. A chance meeting with the head of PR for Sofitel soon saw myself and some of the other speakers from TBEX Thailand whisked off to Sofitel So – a very cool and very stylish hotel in Bangkok, where all the rooms have a different interior design theme based on one of the four elements. The bar itself was laid back and cool. With chill music being played by the DJ’s and massive lounges to relax one, this is one place where I could spend quite a bit of time with various cocktails in hand.

  • Opening Hours: 17:00 – 00:30
  • MRT: Lumpini
  • Address: Sofitel So Bangkok (on Sathorn Road), 2 North Sathorn Road, Bangrak

Vertigo – Moon Bar – Banyon Tree Bangkok

Located on the 61st floor, long and narrow moon bar is like two unique spaces in one. There are two main areas, one for the restaurant and one for the bar, connected by a narrow walkway. Other than the glass wall which rings the outside of the bar, there are no large walls, roofs, or structures of any sort. This rooftop bar is 100% open to the sky, which adds to the feeling of touching the clouds. Even though this rooftop bar is not even close to the tallest in Bangkok, the unique design actually leaves you feeling higher up and more exposed than any of the others.

  • Opening Hours: 18:00 – 22:30 daily, Moon Bar 17:00 – 01:00 (weather permitting)
  • BTS: Sala Daeng MRT: Lumpini
  • Address: Banyan Tree Bangkok, 21/100 South Sathon Road
  • Tel: +66 (0)2 679 1200

The Rooftop – Baiyoke

There was no way we could go home without visiting Bangkok’s highest rooftop bar. It was the end of a long week and we had just come from the TBEX speakers wind up party. The rooftop features cozy lounges, snug up against the glass walls of the bar. It was the perfect place to lay back, relax, and gawk at the craziness taking place in the city below.

  • Opening Hours: 10:00-22:30 (skywalk and rooftop observatory deck)
  • Location: Ratchaprarob Soi 3, Pratunam
  • Price Range: THB 300
