Wellington On a Plate, Wellington’s epic take on the classic restaurant week, 17 days of food-filled fantasies, is almost upon us. From August 11 to 27, Wellington descends into foodie chaos, with gourmet burgers and elaborate cocktails served up at more than 100 food related events in the coolest little capital in the world.

If you like to indulge, and enjoy good food and an even better atmosphere, let this be your winter event.

Egmont St Eatery’s filet-o-cray is delicious. It’s hard to beat a crumbed crayfish and squid burger smothered in crayfish tartare with housemade cheese, with a side of paua salted shoestring fries.

Perhaps my favourite part of Wellington on a Plate has to be the burger competition. This year, 123 burgers  are competing – many matched with some of the local brews from Garage Project in the Aro Valley.

Forget wine tasting with cheese, give me a greasy burger and an IPA any day. I’ve  tried quite a few and, so far, my favourite has been Egmont St Eatery’s filet-o-cray.

You can’t go wrong with a crumbed crayfish and squid burger smothered in crayfish tartare with housemade cheese, with a side of paua salted shoestring fries. Drools.

Wandering along the Wellington waterfront you would have seen the green classic Croc Bikes zipping up and down the harbour side.

But now the waterfront is the best place in town to get your hands on elaborate milkshakes. Coined “freakshakes” by Instagrammers worldwide, Shake milk bar’s crazy shake this month is zombie-themed, teeth and all.

There’s also a healthy, less frightening alternative available.
